Carwyn calls for Wales to be offered
CARWYN Jones has demanded all devolved nations be offered the same Brexit terms, after it emerged the possibility of Northern Ireland effectively staying in the EU Custom’s union has been discussed.
A draft outline of the Brexit agreement discussed by Theresa May and EU leaders yesterday included strong indications that Northern Ireland could continue to operate within the EU customs union and the single market in all but name.
Wales’ First Minister Mr Jones tweeted: “We cannot allow different parts of the UK to be more favourably treated than others.
“If one part of the UK is granted continued participation in the Single Market & Customs Union, then we fully expect to be made the same offer.”
Mr Jones has had a longstanding view that the UK should remain in the customs union, as is Norway.
He told BBC’s Daily Politics last Thursday: “People voted to the leave the EU and that must happen, there is no doubt about that. But there are ways of doing it that are less damaging than others.
“The reality is that we can leave the EU and still have full and unfettered access to the single market which is so important to us and we can have a modified version of freedom of movement.”
