Plans to create site for camper vans at Portmeirion

-

BOSSES at Portmeirion have submitted plans to create a site for camper vans within the grounds.

The Italianate village in Gwynedd is one of Wales’ top visitor attractions, welcoming around 225,000 visitors every year.

Now the popular tourist attraction in Penrhyndeudraeth is hoping to bring more visitors to the site and the wider area with its application to create a camping site.

They want to turn part of the car parking area outside the main entrance into a 28 space facility for motorhomes.

The plans submitted to Gwynedd council also include a shower and toilet block, reception and shop.

Portmeirion said that the development was designed to meet the need for good quality camping places for camper vans in the area.

It said it would help the tourism attraction develop and support existing jobs and help create new roles.

A planning report states that the popularity of camping holidays was increasing and they were having a number of visitors asking about staying in camping vehicles at the site.

Planners at Gwynedd council will now consider the proposals for the campsite.

At the start of the month Portmeirion’s annual Food and Craft Festival, drew in almost 8,000 foodies last weekend – the highest ever recorded for the event.

From cookery demonstrations to Santa’s grotto, a full programme of entertainment and more than 135 stalls selling homeware, handmade gifts, craft beers, and mulled wine, it is touted as of the country’s biggest celebrations of food and drink.

The village is also home to Festival No 6 – named so after Patrick McGoohan’s character in The Prisoner, the cult Sixties TV series filmed in Portmeirion – which is annually held in September.

This year performers included Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, Mogwai, Bloc Party and The Flaming Lips.
