DRAMA graduate Jake is severely visually impaired.

In his own words he might not necessaril­y have the cane, guide dog and glasses that some might expect but he is totally blind in his left eye and has only 25% vision in his right.

That hasn’t stopped him from boasting skills as a photograph­er, film-maker, and comedian as well as freelancin­g with performanc­e and creative arts group UCAN Production­s.

As part of his work for the blind and partially-sighted creative arts co-operative, the 23-year-old helps teach everyone from junior doctors to eyecare profession­als how to adapt to become as accessible as possible.

But, while he might spend his day teaching people to think about others, even daily tasks in Cardiff can take more effort than you might think.

For Jake everything comes down to planning ahead – even down to the choosing the location of his house.

He said: “When I moved to Cardiff I was really concerned about where I moved to.

“I managed to find somewhere that was about five minutes to Cardiff Bay and 15 minutes to town in a straight line so I don’t have to use public transport so much.”

With some buses proving unreliable the best alternativ­e for Jake can be walking – with the help of one of the “best-kept secrets” hidden at every road.
