‘Paint Wales red to back Velindre and the team’

THERE are less than four weeks to go before Wales do battle once more in the Six Nations. And this year there is a better reason than ever to back the boys.

One of Wales’ biggest charities wants you to make sure it’s a campaign to remember, simply by wearing red.

Velindre Cancer Centre, in Cardiff, wants to get as many people as possible to wear red on the eve of the first game to show support for Velindre and the Wales team.

February 2 will be the eve of the first game of the 2018 Six Nations campaign, against Scotland.

The charity hopes to raise £100,000 by getting as many schools, businesses and workplaces to sign up as possible.

The Western Mail and its sister website, WalesOnline, are backing Velindre’s call to people all across Wales. We want to offer our support to both the charity and Wales in the Six Nations.

As well as wearing red – and making a minimum £1 donation – people are asked to think of red-themed activities. They can include red bake sales, tombolas or raffles. Special T-shirts and wristbands will go on sale.

Money raised from the campaign will ensure the best possible support is offered to cancer patients.

It will help fund specialist nurses, and the extra projects the hospital runs to help patients and their families through their cancer journey.

Stars Sam Warburton, George North, Gareth Davies and Sean Holley are backing the campaign.

Media Wales editor-in-chief and WalesOnline editor Paul Rowland said: “We’re huge admirers of the work that Velindre does, and we’re also massive supporters of Welsh rugby, so backing the campaign to get everyone in Wales to wear red on February 2 was a very easy decision to make. We want every school and workplace in Wales to mark the start of the Six Nations by going red for the day to help us raise £100,000 for a fantastic cause.”

President of Velindre Fundraising Jonathan Davies said: “I was delighted to help launch the first Wear Red For Wales And Velindre Campaign, by visiting my old school in Trimsaran, who also took part.

“This time we want more schools, companies and individuals to get involved and help us paint Wales red on February 2.”

Anyone wanting to take part can contact Velindre on info@velindre fundraising or call 029 2031 6211. You can also download a fundraising pack online.
