Tesco fulfilment centres and stores face staff cuts

-

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has begun consultation with 1,700 staff over plans to simplify the operation of its larger stores and fufilment centres.

The move will see it axing people manager and compliance manager staff at its larger stores and fulfilment centres across UK.

The role of customer experience manger, present in 226 stores, will also be removed, which Tesco said would give line managers more direct accountability for customer service.

Tesco said the changes will affect 1,700 colleagues, who will be helped to find alternative roles within the business wherever possible.

It said the net job loss would be around 800, as some 900 new roles will be created.

Tesco said at this stage it couldn’t say how many net jobs could be lost in Wales.

Matt Davies, who heads up Tesco UK and Ireland, said: “These changes remove complexity and will deliver a simpler, more helpful experience for colleagues and customers.

“We recognise these are difficult changes to make but they are necessary to ensure our business remains competitive and set-up for the future.

“Our priority now is to support affected colleagues through these changes in any way we can.

“We hope to retain as many colleagues as possible in the new roles we have created and in the vacancies we currently have available.”
