Cézanne, Portraits of a Life: New Exhibition on Screen, Chepstow’s Drill Hall
CéZANNE, Portraits of A Life, the latest Exhibition on Screen film being shown at Chepstow’s Drill Hall on January 30, features one of the most talked about exhibitions, and acclaimed by art critics’ as number one of their top ten exhibitions of 2017.
This major international exhibition, Cézanne Portraits, which opened in Paris, and is currently showing at the National Portrait Gallery London, before finally moving to Washington USA, has brought together for the first time over 50 of Cézanne’s portraits from collections across the world, including some that have never been on public display in the UK.
Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) is one of the most influential artists of the nineteenth century and his unique method of building form with colour and his analytical approach to nature influenced the art of successive generations of avant-garde artists. In fact, 20th century art can’t be fully appreciated without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne.
Over a working life of some forty-five years, Cézanne made almost 1,000 paintings of which around 160 are portraits. The exhibition offers a unique and fascinating insight into this important aspect of his work. The film features interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and includes correspondence from the artist himself.
