Drink-driver admits killing ‘gentle giant’, 36, in three-car crash

-

A DRINK-DRIVER has admitted killing another man on a road in Maesteg.

Nicholas Darkes, 26, admitted being over the drink-drive limit during the fatal smash on the A4063 road in Caerau.

Cardiff Crown Court heard driver Adam McGuire, 36, was killed in the three-car-collision last month.

Darkes admitted causing Mr Maguire’s death by careless driving while over the prescribed limit.

Darkes, of Neath, appeared via video link in from HMP Cardiff and spoke only to confirm his name and enter his pleas.

Recorder of Cardiff Eleri Rees adjourned sentencing until February 26 when Darkes will attend.

Police said three vehicles were involved in the crash on Caerau, Maesteg, shortly after 10.30pm on Wednesday, January 10.

They said Mr McGuire, from Maesteg, was a passenger in a silver Ford Focus when he died.

Following the crash, the family of Mr McGuire said he would be “greatly missed”.

They said: “Adam was a loveable rogue, a gentle giant, a loving son, brother and uncle who will be greatly missed. He was a carefree brother and son who loved his family especially his nieces and nephews.

“Adam had a passion for motorbikes and throughout his childhood he played rugby and just enjoyed life.

“Adam is known to the local community and in Maesteg and will be greatly missed.”
