Woman ‘could have been killed’ when shop sign fell on head

-

A WOMAN “could have been killed” when she was hit on the head by a large sign falling off a Sainsbury’s supermarket in Swansea.

The incident happened at the store’s branch in Uplands Crescent in the Uplands area of the city at around 2.10pm yesterday.

The woman is not believed to be seriously hurt.

Joel Morgan, the victim’s grandfather, said: “She was getting cash out from the machine when the sign fell and hit her on her head.

“She could have been killed, it could have been kids who were there. In the end her husband took her to hospital for an X-ray as she was waiting two hours for an ambulance and there were none available.”

Local businessman Noah Redfern, who runs Noah’s Yard opposite, witnessed the incident.

He said: “I was walking away from the shop when I heard a bang. The sign had come crashing down from the wall.

“Behind the sign it was all rotten and that seems to be why it fell.

“The woman was not seriously hurt, I think it skimmed her head.

“I was literally walking under it 10 seconds before and those signs are very heavy.”

A local shop worker, who did not want to be named, said: “I didn’t see the sign fall, but all we heard was a big bang and we looked outside to see that the sign had fallen.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “We can confirm there was an incident at our Uplands Crescent store yesterday afternoon.

“We sincerely apologise to our customer and are grateful to our colleagues for helping her.

“Safety is always our priority and we’ve temporarily closed the store while we make sure this can’t happen again.

“We’re working hard to re-open as quickly as possible and are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.”
