The ‘Battle of Portaloo’ at music festival

-

A MOTHER and daughter attacked another woman outside the toilets at tribute music festival Glastonbarry.

Receptionist Amanda Penberthy, 52, and her daughter Jade, 25, sparked a fight as they queued to use the toilets while attending the Glastonbarry festival for tribute acts held in Barry.

A court heard how witnesses saw Jade Penberthy scream insults at victim Rebecca Johnson, 33, calling her a “fat cow”, “goofy” and a “slag” before they clashed at the Portaloos on Saturday, July 29 last year. Penberthy then hit Miss Johnson in the mouth with a can of cider, which exploded in her face.

The court heard Amanda Penberthy then joined in to grab Miss Johnson before they were pulled apart by security – only for a mass scuffle to break out between the three women’s families.

Miss Johnson was pushed to the ground and broke her wrist, before she was jumped on by Amanda Penberthy.

Cardiff Magistrates’ Court heard gym receptionist Amanda Penberthy repeatedly punched Miss Johnson while straddling her on the muddy ground.

Eyewitness Thomas Barlow said: “There was a scuffle going on. Everyone was in a circle like in a school fight. There were 10 or 12 people.”

The court heard both families had been at “loggerheads” for 16 years and Miss Johnson had married Amanda Penberthy’s nephew Craig.

The pair denied assault, claiming they acted in self-defence, but were found guilty by District Judge Stephen Harmes. Amanda Penberthy, of Peterswell Road, Barry, and Jade Penberthy, from Westward Rise, Barry, were bailed and are due to be sentenced next month.
