Police called to redundant Tesco staff party

-

POLICE were called to a farewell party for redundant Tesco staff after reports of fighting between former colleagues.

A woman was injured during a goodbye party for more than 1,000 Tesco call centre staff on their last day of work, South Wales Police have confirmed.

On Friday a total of 1,100 staff members at Tesco House in Cardiff left work for the last time after being made redundant.

Following the closure the supermarket’s customer engagement centres will now be transferred to a site in Dundee after the decision made in June.

During their last day workers were seen with drinks, prosecco glasses and carrying large screen TVs after an auction in the office in Maes-Y-Coed Road. Groups were also spotted cheering and hugging before been taken to the Village Hotel in Coryton for a farewell party.

Contacting WalesOnline, one former Tesco employee said police were called to the hotel on Friday afternoon after reports of a fight between two colleagues.

They said: “I arrived at the Maes Y Coed office at 9am on Friday.

“By 10am a vast majority of colleagues were drinking prosecco, beer, cider and pretty much whatever they could get their hands on. By midday they were largely welloiled.” They added: “There were elderly people enjoying their lunch at that hotel, hotel visitors with their families, business people having business meetings and lunches. The whole thing was a disgrace, bringing Tesco’s name into disrepute.”

A Tesco spokesman confirmed the supermarket giant was aware of the incident but said staff were given one alcoholic drink at the office for a toast.
