Ayoung girl was last night receiving medical attention after being pulled from a car that had gone into a river in Ceredigion.

There was a large police presence in Cardigan town centre after police confirmed that a vehicle which was originally reported stolen had been found in the River Teifi.

At around 3.30pm Dyfed-Powys Police received a report of a missing car – a silver Mini – which disappeared from the old Scout Hall in Cardigan.

At around 6pm police released a statement confirming that the vehicle had been found in the River Teifi.

Police said a child had been removed from the Mini and was receiving medical attention.

An update posted on social media said: “Following a call at 3.30pm, we made [enquiries] as to whereabouts of a silver Mini last seen in Cardigan near the old Scout Hall.

“During a search the vehicle was located in the River Teifi, Cardigan. A child has been removed from the vehicle and is receiving medical attention.”

It is understood the girl, who is reported to be three years old, was then airlifted to hospital by the Wales Air Ambulance.

A search and rescue operation then ensued at the river, largely centred around a stretch of water directly opposite Cardigan Castle.

Dyfed-Powys Police said nobody had been arrested in connection with the incident on Monday.

Officers closed part of a road known as The Strand yesterday evening and initially closed a footbridge crossing the River Teifi.

An inshore lifeboat was launched by the Coastguard to support a river search.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman said earlier: “The Cardigan inshore lifeboat, the Cardigan coastguard, Gwbert coastguard and Moylegrove coastguard are there.”
