Pivac reveals the secret of Scarlets’ success with signings from overseas
SCARLETS boss Wayne Pivac has revealed the secret to his overseas recruitment success as he welcomes another “X-Factor” import on board.
Cheetahs full-back Clayton Blommetjies has been confirmed as the latest signing for next season, following his team-mate Uzair Cassiem in committing to the west Wales region.
They will be arriving this summer, along with Kiwi back five forward Blade Thomson, who is switching from the Hurricanes.
The hope is they will prove just as successful as the other foreign players that have linked up with the Scarlets in recent years.
Kiwi coach Pivac has shown himself to be a very astute judge when it comes to choosing which men to recruit from abroad.
Fellow New Zealanders Hadleigh Parkes and Johnny McNicholl have made a massive impact, as has Irishman Tadhg Beirne, while front five South Africans David Bulbring and Werner Kruger have been really valuable additions to the squad.
So what’s the key to Pivac’s golden touch when it comes to overseas signings?
Well, as the man himself explains, it’s about identifying the right person as much as the right player and finding people who can fit into the Scarlets’ culture.
He explains he doesn’t want robots, but rather players with the X-Factor – like Blommetjies – who will suit the team’s expressive style of play.
“We know the way we want to play the game,” said Pivac.
“We know the positional requirements when we go looking for players, we know the skill sets that we are looking for.
“Then it’s a matter of meeting the people. We do a lot of homework in terms of what they are like away from the rugby field.
“That interests us as well, as to what type of people they are, because we have got a pretty good environment here now and a pretty good culture.
“The players enjoy coming to work and enjoy each other’s company. That’s an important part of it.
“It’s not just rugby ability, it’s the person as well. Hugely so.”
Pivac continued: “The team dynamics that we look for here, we don’t want stereotype rugby players.
“We don’t want robots. It’s not paint by numbers at the Scarlets. It’s very much backing the players’ skills.
“We have a game plan and within that there’s a lot of freedom to play what’s in front of you once we have done the hard work.
“So we need X-Factor players and people that can make good decisions under pressure and generally solid citizens do that more often than not.
“Both the Cheetahs boys are good people and we look forward to welcoming them into the fold at the start of next season.
“They are hard workers. They are family men and they are solid citizens.
“They will bring something to this group which will be slightly different, coming from a different cultural background, which I embrace.”
Recruiting the two Cheetahs is looking all the better business given the form they have shown in recent weeks.
Full-back Blommetjies, 27, was Man of the Match against the Dragons, while No.8 Cassiem, who has just turned 28, picked up the award after the last-gasp victory over Cardiff Blues at the weekend.
“Clayton is a very exciting attacking player,” said Pivac.
“He started his rugby playing at 10. He can kick a long way off both feet, which is handy to have playing at 10 or 15.
“He’s predominantly a full-back now, but he’s got the pace and the step to play on the wing.
“In the modern game you should be interchangeable in the back three and he certainly has that ability.
“His flexibility will offer us options, particularly during the international windows.
“The way we play the game is not too disimilar to the Cheetahs. He’s excited by the way we play the game.
“One of the things that both him and Uzair liked about coming to the Scarlets was they wouldn’t have to change their games.
“The skill-sets they have align themselves to the way we play the game, so it should be an easy smooth transition for those two.
“Clayton will bring X-Factor, there is no doubt about it, and Uzair possesses the skills we believe will suit the way we play the game.
“He is a very good player. He’s dynamic, he likes to carry, he has the ability to offload and he is a very physical individual.
“He has the ability to play across the back row, but we have signed him primarily as a No.8.”
Pivac is set to make a number of changes for Saturday’s PRO14 clash up in Edinburgh, as he rests players and gives time for niggles to clear up with one eye on the huge Champions Cup semi-final against Leinster in Dublin.
