Austin puts the record straight on his health

-

EX-SWANSEA City defender Kevin Austin has been moved to clarify rumours regarding his health.

One of Austin’s former clubs, Bristol Rovers, had tweeted a statement from their verified account this morning that suggested he was suffering with terminal cancer.

“We are saddened to learn that former Rovers defender Kevin Austin is terminally ill,” a statement read. “The club is happy to assist Kevin and his family in any way (we) can.”

However, the 45-year-old contacted Swansea City to clarify that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last June and stressed that it is NOT terminal.

He has been having treatment since the diagnosis that has stabilised his condition.

“I appreciate the nice messages coming from supporters from Swansea – they are fantastic fans – and all the clubs I have played for, but I needed to let people know that the rumours being spread just aren’t true,” said Austin.

“I have pancreatic cancer, but my doctors have said they are happy with the way things are going and it is under control.

“My family is in a good place too, and I just wanted people to know the truth.”

Austin joined the Swans on a free transfer from Bristol Rovers in 2004 and would go on to enjoy one of the best spells of his career, playing 150 times for the club.

During his time in South Wales, he was hard-nosed and uncompromising on the field and muchloved by fans and team-mates alike in a squad that had no shortage of club favourites.

In his first year at Swansea, he made 50 appearances in all competitions as the Swans secured promotion to League One.

He enjoyed further success in the 2007/08 season, the first at the Liberty Stadium, helping the club to the League One title before going on to play for Chesterfield, Darlington and Boston United.

“Everyone at the club was sad to hear the news,” said a Swansea City spokesperson.

“Kevin was not only a fantastic footballer during his time with us, he is also an amazing person.

“We feel for Kevin and his family at this difficult time and our door will remain open for any support or assistance they need.”
