Dixon delight as Cardiff run show against Llanelli

-

CARDIFF put on a masterclass in running rugby as they comfortably defeated Llanelli 45-20 at the Arms Park – and the performance impressed assistant coach James Dixon.

Nathan Huish and Will Rees-Hole were both at the double for the Blue and Blacks with Gareth Thompson, Amir Jiwa-Waji and Corey Howells also going over.

Thompson converted four of the seven tries while Llywarch Ap Myrddin kicked a penalty. “I was delighted with our performance,” said Dixon.

“We scored lots of tries and played expansive rugby and, to their credit, Llanelli did the same.

“This was exactly the response we were looking for after the Cross Keys defeat and we got it particularly as we did a lot of work in the training sessions during the build up to the match.

“A lot of things we put into play in this game were missing during the last few weeks.

“Our attitude and work rate off the ball was a big focus for us and we definitely achieved that – as the scoreboard suggests.”

Ashley Evans, Nathan Hart and Elgan Lewis bagged the Llanelli tries with Ashley Sutton adding five points from the tee.

Meanwhile, Newport, in fifth, are one place and one point behind Cardiff with three games in hand.

The Black and Ambers bounced back from their defeat at Carmarthen Quins to beat Bargoed 29-3 at Rodney Parade.

Jon Morris scored twice for Newport with Joe Bartlett, Henry Palmer and a penalty try also on the scoresheet.

Elsewhere, Cross Keys avenged their WRU National Cup quarterfinal exit by Llandovery by beating the Drovers 31-10 in their rearranged Premiership encounter at Pandy Park.

First-half tries from flanker Garin Price and wing Lloyd Lewis along with further scores from stalwarts Tom Lampard and Scott Matthews in the second half secured a third straight home league victory for Keys.
