You’ll need a head for heights to stay here!
IT’S a must-stay for lovers of spectacular views , but you’ll also need a head for heights when you check into this north Wales hotel.
The Lighthouse in Llandudno is precariously perched on a cliff-top on Great Orme’s Head, nearly a 350ft sheer drop into the Irish Sea.
Constructed in 1862 by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, the fortress-like building still operated as a beacon to ward ships away from the rocks below until March 1985.
These days though it’s a B&B – with a stay costing from £90 a night – although its Lamp Room still retains the lighthouse’s original glass panelling from behind which those powerful beams once emanated.
Acting as a sitting area it now allows guests to gaze at the incredible panoramic vistas, stretching all the way to the horizon. The hotel’s other two en-suites also include quirky touches like a Victorianstyle four poster bed, a black slate fireplace, various vintage maritime collectibles and even portholes through which the lighthouse keepers of old would point their telescopes.
The hotel is situated within the Great Orme Country Park and surrounded by amazing scenery and wildlife, as well as being just two miles from the centre of Llandudno’s numerous pubs and restaurants.
However, the optic itself – a framework of prism lenses that projected the light out to sea – can now be viewed at the visitor centre on the summit of the Great Orme. ■
