CARDIGAN MARKET REPORT, APRIL 23 (JJ MORRIS)

Fat hoggets (65):

As time progressed, a far smaller entry of hoggets sold to a steadier trade, with the best reaching 244p/kg for 42k from Davies, Troedrhiw Fach, while the day’s top price of £111/ head was seen for 62k from Howells, Henllan.

Spring lambs (121):

A very small entry of new-season lambs topped at £124/head twice for 45k (276p/kg) and 49k (253p/kg) lambs, both from Davies, Blaeniago. Other leading prices at £121 for 45.5k (266p/kg) from Thomas, Ciliau Ganol, who also sold 39k at £110 (282p/kg); £120 for 43k (279p/kg) from Hughes, Bronwydd.

Cull sheep (46):

The best types reached £86 for a ram from Evans, Ty Rhos Farm; £83 for ewes from Evans, Ty Rhos; £82.50 for a ewe from Rimmer, Maesllyn; £80 for a ram from Davies, Blaeniago, who also sold another ram at £74; £77.50 for a ewe from Boak, Bronwenall­t; £77.50 for a ewe from Cullen, North; £75 for ewes from Evans, Ty Rhos Farm.

Store hoggets, lambs and ewes, and lamb couples (18):

A small entry of ewes and lambs topped at £116 twice from Cullen, North Fawr. Store lambs reached £94 for 39k from Thomas, Ciliau Ganol; £89 for 43k from Davies, Troedrhiw Fach, who also sold 42k at £80. Store hoggets reached £59 for 34k from Cullen, North Fawr Farm.

Calves (69):

A good entry of calves peaked at £258 for a Lim bull from Davies Cyf, Canllefaes Uchaf; £250 for a Charolais heifer from Parry, Croesgwyn, who also sold a Charolais bull at £220; £245 for a BB heifer from Jenkins & Rees Cyf, Trefere Fawr; £222 for a Hereford bull from Jones a’I Gwmni, Penlan Y Mor, who also sold other Hereford heifers at £220 and £200; £212 for a BB heifer from Thomas & Son, Ffynnonwen.

The best of the black and white bull calves reached £110 for a Friesian from Williams, Treale; £98 for a H/Fr from Harries, Bryngolau.

LLANYBYDDE­R, APRIL 15 (EVANS BROS)

On a day of special entries in the in-lamb ewe section, the crowds didn’t disappoint as they flocked to support the local family of Messrs Howells, Tycam, who favoured Evans Bros to conduct a flock dispersal due to ill-health.

With many local families keen to get their names down on the book, the first pen of the day made the top price of £175, going to Messrs Griffiths, Fferm y Cwrt.

Another flock dispersal saw 170 head forward from Mr and Mrs Harrison, Bedwhirion, which saw a top of £135 for strong Texel ewes.

Store hoggets sold extremely well, with many heads of forward stores in the £60 and £70 mark. Prime hoggets were slightly easier in trade than last week, with the daily market average reaching 1.60pkg.

Trade in the cull section saw a demand for the heavier, meatier types.
