Two south Wales breweries win Tesco supply deals
TWO expanding south Wales breweries have won supply deals with Tesco stores. The contracts for Swansea’s Boss Brewery and Llantrisantbased Glamorgan Brewing Company mean that three products from each will be stocked by Tesco stores across Wales.
It the first time that both the breweries have worked with Tesco, joining a host of famous brewing names in the supermarket chain’s beer aisles.
The three new lines from Glamorgan have just hit the shelves of Tesco’s Welsh stores. All three – Glamorgan Cwrw Gorslas, Glamorgan Welsh Pale Ale and Jemima’s Pitchfork – are sold in 500ml bottles.
They have been joined by three beers from Boss Brewing – Boss Blonde, Boss Boss, and Boss Boom, the last of which is an exclusive line to Tesco. Each of the Boss products are being sold in 330ml cans.
Glamorgan Brewing’s managing director Richard Anstee said the listing was a major achievement for the business.
He added: “We’ve been working hard at our brewery in Llantrisant to bring the best of Welsh beer to our customers, who are always asking when it will be more readily available to buy,” he said.
“Now they can buy our premium Welsh beer from stores close to home and it’s a massive achievement for us.
“As we continue to grow our company, with exciting plans to come over the next few months and years, we’ll continue to produce excellent Welsh beer. It’s what we do, it’s where we’re from.”
Boss’ director Sarah John, pictured right, said the deal would help increase awareness of the Swansea brand, and is hoping the exclusive Boss Boom line in particular will prove a big hit with Tesco customers.
She said: “We are delighted to be working with Tesco, as not only will it hopefully provide another fruitful revenue stream but also greater brand awareness,” she said.
“We’ve developed an exclusive line, Boss Boom (a 6.0% strong ale) which was created in collaboration with Tesco. We’re confident that consumers will be drawn to this product in particular as it’s only available in Tesco – not anywhere else!”
James Lamont, Tesco’s local buying manager for Wales, said he was pleased to be able to add two new Welsh breweries to the range in store.
He added: “We know that our Welsh consumers are becoming increasingly discerning when it comes to beer and want to be able to purchase high-quality local ales.
“It is great to be able to add Boss and Glamorgan to the roll-call of Welsh breweries that Tesco works with in Wales, and we believe that their products will prove popular with our customers, many of whom may be buying their beers for the first time.” Tesco works with more than 50 food and drink producers in Wales, with more than 350 Welsh products stocked at Welsh stores alone, and others stocked at stores throughout the UK.
