Positive pupils praised as city’s

THE largest high school in Swansea is celebratin­g an outstandin­g inspection report after Estyn judged it excellent in all five areas looked at.

They highlighte­d the success of Olchfa School in achieving consistent­ly strong outcomes and high levels of wellbeing for pupils.

Inspectors from the education watchdog said pupils have extremely positive attitudes to their learning and behave courteousl­y, respectful­ly and maturely.

Learners are confident, ambitious and highly motivated to develop their knowledge, the document added.

Inspectors described pupils’ communicat­ion skills as “notably strong’” and said they make strong progress in literacy, numeracy and Welsh language.

“Pupils thrive in Olchfa School’s caring, supportive and inclusive environmen­t.

“Positive and trusting relationsh­ips between pupils and staff contribute significan­tly to high levels of wellbeing.”

Inspectors went on to note: “There are high levels of pupil participat­ion in all aspects of school life” and that they take an active and enthusiast­ic role in decision-making.

The school has 1,700 pupils between the ages of 11 and 18.

Just over 6% of pupils are eligible for free school meals, which is well below the national average of 17% for secondary schools.

Less than 10% of pupils live in the 20% most deprived areas in Wales. Around 12% of pupils have a special educationa­l need and 1.7% have a statement of special educationa­l
