A17-YEAR-OLD boy suffered serious injuries after an alleged attack on a city street yesterday. Armed police were sent to the street in the Ely area of Cardiff, which was sealed off as officers launched an investigation into reports that a male had been attacked.

As well as the boy who suffered serious injuries, another patient was taken to hospital from Howell Road.

Residents in the area reported a heavy police presence on the street as 10 officers cordoned off the road leading to Grand Avenue.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police confirmed officers with firearms were called to the scene but were later stood down.

She said: “South Wales Police deployed firearms officers to Howell Road, Ely at approximately 11.10am following reports that a male had been attacked. Those firearms officers have now been stood down and a male has been conveyed to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.”

A spokeswoman for Welsh Ambulance Services confirmed two patients had been taken to the University Hospital of Wales.

She said: “We were called on Wednesday at approximately 11.10am to reports of a medical emergency on Howell Road, Ely, Cardiff. We responded with one rapid response vehicle and one emergency ambulance, where two patients were taken to the University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff.”

Forensic officers were seen examining a house on the street with a boarded-up window.

Evidence was also collected on pavement outside a second house.

Residents on the street said a teenager had been injured on Wednesday morning, and reported they had heard “shouting and screaming” the previous night.

One person, who did not want to be named, said: “It was kicking off last night about half past one.

“I didn’t realise it had got that bad.” Another resident said: “I hear loud music at that house often and it’s quite rowdy, but we’re all a bit rowdy.

“Never seen anything major though, it’s a quiet place round here. Few little scraps and scuffles but you get that anywhere you go.

“All the neighbours are good as gold. Never had a row with them, never.”

Others in the neighbourhood described the incident as a “shock”.

One mum said: “My son walks home down this road from school, I’m going have to text him to go a different way. You worry about your kids being safe, you know? It could’ve been mine.”

Another resident added: “It’s not safe any more. I’ve been here 14 years and nothing like that has happened. It’s quite frightening.”
