Nominations, please, for Jo Cox Community Champions Awards

-

THE first-ever Jo Cox Cymru Awards will be held later this summer as people across Wales are asked to nominate local individuals and organisations who have gone the extra mile in their community.

The Community Champions Awards 2018 have been set up as a way of expressing appreciation for community activism across three categories: Community Champion, Tackling Loneliness Champions and Women’s Champion.

The awards are sponsored by Eluned Morgan, the AM for Mid and West Wales, who when she was a Member of the European Parliament, first worked with Jo.

Labour MP Jo Cox, a 41-year-old mother of two, died in June 2016 after being shot and stabbed multiple times on the steps of her constituency surgery.

Eluned said: “Jo believed that we have more in common than that which divides us and this award was founded to highlight the fantastic work happening all over Wales on the issues Jo cared so deeply about.

“I am really proud to have worked alongside Jo. I can think of no better way to celebrate Jo’s legacy or to share her message of unity and compassion than to pay tribute to the kind and selfless acts happening in communities like ours every day.”

Judges include the Western Mail’s editor Catrin Pascoe, Heart Radio’s Steve Francis, and Menna Richards, who is a former director of BBC Cymru Wales.

* The closing date for nominations is May 22, 2018.

Submissions must receive the support of your local AM or MP via the website at www.jocoxawards.cymru. Postal forms are available on request by calling 0300 200 7264.
