The best of luck with instigating change
READING the excellent article (WM, May 2) on the views of the leader of the Welsh Local Government Association re-established how important having our own Welshmedia papers is.
Regarding the views of Ms Wilcox, regarding reorganisation proposals from Welsh Labour Local Government Minister Alun Davies AM, either after 20 years in the Labour camp Mr Davies has failed to understand Labour’s Welsh local councillors’ small “c” conservatism, or he is prepared to fight for those who are lumbered with everincreasing, above-inflation costs associated with having 22 local authorities with a population of just three million.
From education to licensing, the potential to reduce costs by economies of scale is extensive.
As for Ms Wilcox stating not one Labour council leader wants change, why would they? All council leaders receive excellent financial rewards.
And as for Ms Wilcox’s statement “nobody wants this”, I do, so will the vast majority of local taxpayers once they know the facts.
Gwynedd and Ynys Mon have to be congratulated for starting discussions on a possible merger. Of course, they are not Labour-run.
I hope the Labour Cabinet supports Alun Davies. However, I would not bet on this.
