Ospreys could now be facing an Italian job

-

Benetton and the Ospreys, with the Italians having home advantage through accumulating more regular season points.

So what exactly needs to happen for that scenario to kick into gear?

Well, it would need Leinster to win the Champions Cup and all four semi-finalists from the Challenge Cup to qualify via their league standings.

Finalists Cardiff Blues and losing semi-finalists Newcastle are already assured of their places via the PRO14 and Aviva Premiership respectively.

And the Blues’ opponents in Bilbao on April 11, Gloucester, currently lie in the sixth and final qualifying spot in the English top flight.

The problem is Pau, who were beaten by the Blues in the semi-finals at a packed Arms Park.

They are down in eighth spot in the French Top14, with the final round of regular season matches to come this weekend.

To finish in the top six and qualify for the Champions Cup via their league, they would need to beat Toulon at home this Saturday and hope that two of Lyon, Castres or La Rochelle slip up in their home games against Montpellier, Oyonnax and Stade Francais respectively.

It looks a fairly unlikely scenario, while Gloucester could also slip out of the top six of the Aviva with the final round of matches coming up this weekend.

They are away to Saracens and could be overhauled by both Sale and Bath, who are home to Leicester and London Irish respectively.

So a lot of results would have to fall into place for the Ospreys to face Benetton rather than Ulster.

But it does remain a serious possibility.
