Beach hut for auction, a slice of history for £20k
THIS beach hut in Mumbles is to go up for auction – with a guide price of £20,000.
The eye-popping sum is the suggested figure when the hut at Rotherslade beach goes up for auction next month.
The timber-constructed hut has no electricity, no toilet and no parking provided, and doesn’t have its own water supply, although there is a supply shared with other hut owners.
But it is situated on one of Gower’s most popular beaches and is within walking distance of neighbouring Langland Bay.
Langland is famous for its row of beach huts overlooking the beach, but those are owned and leased out by Swansea council.
The huts at Rotherslade are privately owned, often being passed on through families, and rarely come on to the market. So the rare opportunity to buy one is perhaps a factor in its astonishing asking price.
Chris Hope, director of estate agents Dawsons handling the sale of the property, said: “Unique is a word that is overused, but this is a slice of history.
“The pitches in Langland started to be built in the 1860s, and were built up in the 1920s.
“But they really came into their own in the 1950s, when families would go down to the beach huts to enjoy a day at the seaside.”
The beach hut at Rotherslade goes up for sale by public auction at Swansea’s Marriott Hotel on Wednesday, June 13, at 3pm.
