This is shockingly discriminatory

- Anne O Regan Cardiff

THEY call it “long lasting gender equality in Wales.”

I would say it’s the most discriminatory proposal Welsh Government will ever see.

Feminist organisations such as Welsh Women’s Aid, Chwarae Teg, Women’s Equality Network and Women Connect First, call for a specific government minister for women. Why? To promote equality for women and girls. Not even women and children, our boys are not part of their equality plan.

They have launched a manifesto a 20-page document. It lays out 10 things that they believe need to take place.

So far they have released three objectives:

1) A minister for women in place by 2021.

2) Prioritising woman’s health. I have never heard of anything so shockingly discriminatory in all my life. Has anyone told them that women live longer than men, more men die of prostate cancer than women of breast cancer? Have they looked at suicide rates of men in Wales? What about provision of services for male victims of domestic violence? And accepting teenage boys into refuge? Women’s Aid would be the expert on that one.

3) Making the Welsh government accountable to women and girls and equal leadership.

The Welsh government is accountable to all the electorate not just women. This is a call for discriminatory policies to be put in place. These groups are obviously not satisfied with all-women shortlists and board quotas.

I hope we will see a condemning statement from the minister responsible for equality in Welsh government.

This is also a serious wake-up call to the Equality and Human Rights Commission. These feministdriven organisations are asking for discriminatory health measures and further policies to be put in place to disadvantage and to discriminate against our men and boys.

Men and boys have a protected characteristic, they too should have protection and support from the commission.
