A 20-YEAR-OLD man from Cardiff has died after he was stabbed in Liverpool city centre.

Fatah Warsame was attacked on Hanover Street – which leads from the city’s central railway station to the waterfront – at around 4am on Sunday. A post-mortem examination yeserday revealed he suffered a single stab wound to his chest.

It is not yet known why the victim was in Liverpool’s clubland area and who, if anyone, was with him when the fatal attack happened.

Mr Warsame’s family, from the Canton area of Cardiff, were too upset to speak about the tragedy yesterday.

Just 24 hours after the attack, police patrol cars and vans were seen driving slowly around the area where Mr Warsame was knifed.

One of the vehicles was a Matrix van, from the unit which deals with gun, knife and gang crime.

Emergency crews had been called during the early hours of Sunday to the popular location, at the junction of the city’s Wood Street, and took Mr Warsame to hospital – but he later died as a result of his injuries.

The incident unfolded near Chinese restaurant City Buffet and the Head of Steam pub.

Following the fatal attack, forensic teams worked meticulously at the scene to gather and document evidence, and the area was cordoned off.

Taxi drivers were also urged to share CCTV footage from their cabs, if they were in the area at the time.

Taxi Alliance Liverpool sent out several messages to their fellow drivers and posted on Twitter calling on drivers to “do the right thing” after the killing.

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson echoed calls for anyone with information to share it with the police.

He wrote on social media: “Anyone who has any information on the horrific fatal stabbing that took place on Hanover Street in city centre please, please contact @MerseyPolice we need to catch the person responsible quickly.

“Another senseless act leaving a family heartbroken. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

One woman told the Liverpool Echo: “I am heartbroken about what has happened. I just can’t help but feel for the lad’s parents. It is disgusting bringing a knife into town. That lad has lost his life – and for what?”

Another added: “Why does anyone carry a knife or any sort of weapon on a night out? It is another senseless waste of life.”

Detective Superintendent Lee Turner said: “Knife crime will not be tolerated in Merseyside and those caught carrying a weapon will be brought to justice.

“Carrying or using any dangerous weapon does not offer protection and in fact often puts you and those around you at more risk.”
