Swans fans make their views heard as team falls out of Premier League
EMOTIONAL Swansea City fans made their views clear as the team were relegated from the Premier League following a 2-1 defeat to Stoke City yesterday.
Supporters made their voices heard around the Liberty Stadium during the Swans’ match with the Potters, protesting before and during the game.
Most fans said that they wanted chairman Huw Jenkins to step down from his position. He conceded in an interview in December that his position would become untenable if Swansea were to be relegated.
Mr Jenkins was absent from the Liberty yesterday, and there also appeared to be heightened security around the directors’ box, with police and stewards nearby.
In the early stages of the game, there were frequent chants of “You greedy b ****** s, get out of club” and “We want Jenkins out, we want Jenkins out”.
Before the game, supporters vented their frustrations, with a planned protest arranged for 1pm outside the ground. Toby Williams, 10, from Swansea, said: “As fans we need to get behind the players’ backs. Some fans have been so aggressive to players, they need to be more supportive.”
David Lewis, 54, from Birchgrove, said: “We just want our club back – 45 years I’ve supported this club. I don’t care about going down, it’s the economy that is going to be ruined.”
Jeff Phillipart, 53, from Penllergaer, said: “I think relegation may be a good thing, it will give us the wake-up call we need.”
