LUKASZ FABIANSKI

Excellent penalty save to deny Shaqiri from the spot, but not enough to help Swansea to victory or even a point. Was in tears at the end. Supporters made clear their desire for the Poland international to stay, but he is too good for the Championship.

ANGEL RANGEL

Rolled back the years with some of his forward forays, even at 35 he offered more in advanced areas than Kyle Naughton. The body can no longer match the sharpness of his mind, but this was a fine performance to go out on.

MIKE VAN DER HOORN

A few tough moments, including one missed hack at a clearance and caught out trying to play offside for the Stoke opener.

ALFIE MAWSON

The shrug between himself and van der Hoorn after Badou Ndiaye’s leveller spoke volumes and was nowhere to be seen as Peter Crouch nodded the visitors in front. Will inevitably leave this summer.

MARTIN OLSSON

One of his better performances in recent weeks, getting much higher up the pitch and causing Stoke problems. Won corners and got balls into the box even if the final ball was, at times, lacking quality. Where has this sort of performance been?

ANDY KING

Got the early goal that gave a slither of hope to some around the ground and was heavily involved during Swansea’s best spell of the match.

NATHAN DYER

Huffed and puffed down the right but had a frustrating afternoon. Caused Eric Pieters few problems and saw the fans get on his back before being replaced by Sam Clucas.

JORDAN AYEW

A performance that was in line with those he’s put in since returning from suspension. Cut a frustrated figure for most of the afternoon and was crowded out at just about every turn.

WAYNE ROUTLEDGE

Had a great chance to double Swansea’s lead soon after King’s opener but chose to cut back onto his right foot when hitting it with his left felt like the only option.

ANDRE AYEW

Offered more than some but has lacked a cutting edge in front of goal since returning from West Ham. Headed straight at Butland just after the hour mark and should have done far more with Carroll’s cut back.

STARMAN: TOM CARROLL

Another to put a difficult few weeks behind him to put in one of his better performances. Probed and distributed well and his burst into the box would have set up Swansea’s second had Andre Ayew’s close-range effort not struck Tammy Abraham.

SUBSTITUTES

TAMMY ABRAHAM (On for Routledge, 57) 6; Was willing throughout but struggled to actually test Butland. Blocked one goalbound Andre Ayew effort. LEON BRITTON (On for King, 57) 7; His introduction lifted the crowd and distrubuted with typical aplomb, though one misplaced pass will irk him. One of Swansea’s greats and was moved to tears by postmatch reception. SAM CLUCAS (On for Dyer, 68) 6; Showed up well and his touches around the Stoke box caused problems but, ultimately, couldn’t affect the outcome.

STOKE CITY

Butland, Bauer, Shawcross, Zouma, Pieters, Allen (Fletcher 8), Sorenson (Ireland 76), Ndiaye, Shaqiri, Crouch, Diouf.
