Many Lords have not accepted referendum

-

THERE is an obvious need for a revising and scrutinising upper chamber in Parliament. But does it have to be this medieval anacronism.

There is without doubt a body of knowledge and expertise in the House of Lords. There are also time-servers, party donors and politicians who can’t get used to the idea that they are no longer players on the big stage.

Those who thought that Britain was a long established parliamentary democracy have had something of an eye -opener recently. Many who have never accepted the result of the referendum and have sworn to overturn it, have been having a field day lately in the House of Lords.

A seemingly never-ending series of amendments designed to cause as much confusion as delay as possible. Many of these people have interests in the EU such as pensions and property but how many declare it when they are lecturing the rest of us? Do we need to be told what fools we are to question the “benefits” of the EU when many working people in this country are struggling on wages that have been virtually static for 10 years, with little or no job security?

Where are those “socialists”who never had a good word for the House of Lords but now like to show off their ermine robes? Other democracies have elected, upper chambers more in tune with the 21st century, why can’t we?
