NEIL Hamilton has been ousted as leader of Ukip in the Assembly. A vote took place yesterday and instead, Caroline Jones will now lead the party in the Senedd.

Mr Hamilton represents Mid and West Wales in the Assembly.

In a statement Mrs Jones, who represents South Wales West, said: “We intend to be a cohesive team and all members of the group are welcome to remain.

“As always, the group will be focusing on the issues affecting Wales.

“We are part of Ukip as a party and intend to continue to build our membership in Wales and support the people who elected us.”

Mr Hamilton has been leader of the Assembly group since Ukip took seven seats in the 2016 election.

He has hit the headlines in his time as leader, notably for a comment calling Leanne Wood AM and Kirsty Williams AM as “political concubines in Carwyn Jones’ harem”.

The party has had a tumultuous time since it entered Welsh politics two years ago.

In January they said that Mandy Jones, who replaced Nathan Gill after he stood down, would not sit with their group.

Mark Reckless left the party and now sits as an Independent with the Conservatives.

They have also been at the centre of rows about their choice of language within the Siambr and Gareth Bennett AM was banned from speaking in the chamber after comments he made about transgender people.

Michelle Brown AM has also recently been suspended from the Senedd for her racist comments in a phone call.
