Daughters of the Sea are to be celebrated
THE “Sons of the Sea” have been
celebrated in song, on stage, and around campfires for generations.
But what about some of the Daughters of the Sea? What bobbing up and down have they done?
A chance to find out is coming up at the Millennium Centre as part of the Century of Hope programme of Women’s Archive Wales to mark the 100th anniversary of Votes for Women. Actress, dramatist and regular scriptwriter for the BBC’s Pobol y Cwm Manon Eames will present Women at Sea: the Research of Dr Aled Eames.
There will also be an exhibition of Women Working in The Associated British Ports of Wales, and popular lecturer Professor Bill Jones will give the overall view of The Heritage of Cardiff as an International Port.
The evening is a celebration of the maritime heritage, challenges and opportunities – past and future – of Cardiff Bay and will be held in the Preseli Room of the Millennium Centre on Wednesday, May 30, 5.50pm-8pm.
The event is free and there’s no need to register.
Readers can just turn up in Cardiff Bay and enjoy hearing something of the chequered history of this very special place – and see why the Daughters of the Sea deserve to be ranked with those long-vaunted old Sons of the Sea. Jean Silvan Evans Peterston-super-Ely
