Fire crews fight blaze for over an hour

-

AN ACCIDENTAL garden fire caused serious damage to a family home.

Fire crews spent 90 minutes putting out the fire at a house on Pen y Cae Road in Lansbury Park, Caerphilly.

Plumes of black smoke were sent high into the air and pictures from Saturday afternoon’s blaze show large amounts of damage to the house, garden and conservatory.

Passerby Mark Morgan was with his wife Sarah on their way from their home in Hengoed to Trethomas when they came across the scene.

He said: “The fire brigade were just arriving as we went past. The house was in a pretty bad way.

“The flames were going all up the walls and there was smoke coming out of the windows.”

One neighbour said: “The wooden shed caught fire. It went from the shed to the fence and then the conservatory.

“We were all in and the black smoke was absolutely horrendous. A lot of the debris came over my garden. The mum was really upset.”

Another neighbour said: “At first there was some ash and melted plastic coming into my garden, I thought it was a bonfire.

“I looked out the window and there was people milling outside and I realised

“The flames were higher than the house and the smoke was black.

“One fire engine came and then a second came a bit later.

“Another one came this morning to check there was no damage to everyone else’s houses and that our fire alarms were working.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service confirmed three engines were at the scene and said the cause of the fire was “accidental ignition”.
