Angler dies after falling into sea off north Wales

AN ANGLER has died after falling into the sea in north Wales.

Emergency service were called at 7.30am yesterday morning following reports that an angler had fallen into the sea from Llandudno’s Great Orme headland.

A second man, who had tried to help, also had to be rescued.

Llandudno RNLI said they were called out by Holyhead Coastguard at 7.36am.

They headed with coastguards to Pigeons Cave on Pen Trwyn.

“The casualty was quickly recovered from the water into the lifeboat which at once set off at full speed for the RNLI sea-front boathouse.

“In view of the casualty’s condition the RNLI crew simultaneously radioed Holyhead Coastguard to scramble rescue helicopter Rescue 136 and a land ambulance to meet them on arrival at the boathouse.

“As a result no sooner had the lifeboat been beached and the casualty brought ashore than the helicopter landed close by.

“Very shortly afterwards it airlifted the casualty to hospital.

“The lifeboat then returned to Pen Trwyn to rescue from rocks at the foot of the cliffs a second man who had earlier entered the sea to try to help the angler.”

North Wales Police confirmed that the first man had sadly died after been taken to hospital.

A spokesman for the force said: “At around 7.30am today, Sunday, May 20, police received a call reporting a man had fallen into the sea in Llandudno.

“The Coastguards attended and rescued one male who was taken to hospital but has sadly since passed away.

“Another man who had tried to help at the incident was also taken to hospital.”
