Extra hip surgeon joins specialists at Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale
MR Michael Cronin from Cardiff has recently returned to work in Wales and joins the existing specialist hip team at the Joint Replacement Centre Wales.
Based at Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals, Michael Cronin has teamed up with hip specialists Alun John, Stephen Jones and Phillip Thomas. His NHS consultant post is based at Morriston Hospital.
Qualifying from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 2000, his orthopaedic training was undertaken in London and south Wales, during which time he built a strong interest in hip surgery, including a one-year Fellowship training in young adult hip surgery, based at Guys Hospital in London.
He has also travelled extensively visiting surgeons with similar interests to further his skills.
Mr Cronin’s interest in hip surgery, or non-surgical treatment if possible, ranges from keyhole and open bony surgery to sports hip surgery, total hip replacement and revision total hip replacement.
He employs newer minimally invasive or muscle sparing techniques where appropriate.
After his specialist hip training, he left Wales to take up a post as consultant orthopaedic surgeon at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust in 2013 and worked with Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital near Leamington Spa. In the NHS, he worked as the clinical lead of the largest specialist hip preservation unit in the UK, treating patients referred from all over England, Wales and Scotland.
He has chosen to return to Wales and bring this expertise in hip surgery, some of which was not previously available in the country, to treat patients with a wide range of hip problems ranging from adolescence to old age.
With a keen interest in teaching, he is involved in the training programme for junior orthopaedic surgeons and runs a visiting post for an overseas surgeon to gain experience in this field.
He also provides training to consultants across Europe and the Middle East in muscle sparing hip replacement techniques.
