How many Swans will be flying off to pastures new after relegation blow?

- MATTHEW SOUTHCOMBE Sports writer matthew.southcombe@walesonline.co.uk

IT is going to be a busy summer at the Liberty Stadium as relegation from the Premier League inevitably brings about a high turnover in players.

Swansea City will struggle to hold onto their star names, who will have ambitions of playing in the top leagues around Europe as opposed to the second tier.

And the rumour mill is already in full swing, despite having the entire summer ahead of us.

The likes of Lukasz Fabianski and Alfie Mawson are being linked with clubs, while Ki Sung-yueng has already said his goodbyes.

Here’s our verdict on the rumours so far...

LUKASZ FABIANSKI to Newcastle/ Watford/Crystal Palace/Cardiff City

THIS one certainly forced an involuntary raise of the eyebrows on Sunday.

Fabianski will be looking for a club in one of Europe’s top leagues and shouldn’t struggle to find multiple suitors.

He could be an attractive prospect to a club as high up the league as Liverpool, but will certainly be able to do a job at the likes of Newcastle or Watford.

It’s difficult to imagine Fabianski, the same goalkeeper who left the Liberty Stadium surface in floods of tears on the final day, joining the Swans’ bitter rivals.

If that move does advance, and one would have to imagine it is unlikely in the extreme, the SA1 club would surely make their neighbours pay through the nose for one of their most prized assets.

ALFIE MAWSON to Spurs/ Newcastle/Everton

THE former Barnsley man has long been linked with moves away from the Liberty, even before relegation from the top flight was confirmed.

A young, English centre half with obvious qualities is inevitably going to interest many and you can only see him playing Premier League football next term.

Manchester United have been linked with a move in excess of £50 million for Spurs centre-back Toby Alderweireld, so there could be a vacancy among Mauricio Pochettino’s ranks.

Mawson would likely be more assured of a place in the first team at the likes of Everton and Newcastle.

He’s yet to prove he has the quality to play at a top four club but the potential is obvious and he’d likely jump at the chance to sign for Spurs as he looks to boost his England aspirations.

Will need to recover from knee surgery – he is facing around two months on the sidelines - but is surely going to be on the move.

KI SUNG-YUENG to AC Milan/West Ham

THE midfielder was also linked with moves away from the club earlier in the season, with the links with Serie A giants AC Milan appearing in the early part of 2018.

His stock fell among the Jack Army as his form suffered as badly as anyone’s in the disastrous run-in that sealed the club’s fate, particularly as his performances suggested he knew his future was secure even while the club’s was not.

His departure was confirmed hours after the final whistle against Stoke, although his destination is yet to be made official. West Ham looks like a goer, though.

KYLE BARTLEY to Leeds/Rangers

HAD the Swans retained their Premier League status, they’d have been more inclined to entertain the possibility of seeing Bartley go.

The centre-back had a stunning season on loan at Leeds the season before last but has struggled with injury this season, decimating his first-team hopes.

His loan spell at Elland Road has proven he is a more than capable asset in the Championship and the Swans are now likely to want him to stay.

The links with Leeds persist and Rangers have also been part of the conversation but is contracted to the South Wales club until 2021.

OLI MCBURNIE to Leeds/Rangers

THE striker banged in nine goals in 17 games while out on loan at Barnsley in the second half of last season, capturing the attention of Leeds and later Rangers.

A move to Rangers is likely to be a tempting one for the young Scotland international and the chance to work with icon Steven Gerrard at the club he supports would be tempting.

However, he will surely be offered a new contract – he has a year remaining on his current deal – and he has every chance of being the main striker as the Swans begin their Championship crusade.

The virtual guarantee of being the main man next season will be a difficult prospect to turn down for the 21-year-old.

WILFRIED BONY to Fenerbahce

THE Turkish side were reportedly ready to move in for Bony last summer and more links have appeared as this summer approaches.

He’s unlikely to hang around for a season in the Championship and it’s understood the Swans would be willing to let the striker go after a disappointing return to SA1.

Indifferent form and injuries have made for an unhappy return to the South Wales for the much-loved frontman.

A move would seem on the cards, though Fener club president Aziz Yildirim put a halt to any potential
