CULL SHEEP AND STORE HOGGETS (199)

A GOOD entry of cull sheep saw a top price of £113.50 for ewes from Evans & Co, Pantirion, who also sold other ewes at £109, rams at £108, £99 and ewes at £98.50; £109 for a ewe from James & Son, Ciliau Hwnt, who also sold other ewes at £105.50 and £104; £103 for a ewe from Davies Cyf, Canllefaes Uchaf.

A small entry of store hoggets sold to £83 for 38k from Webster Farms, Nantyrefai­l, who also sold 31k at £67.50.

EWE AND LAMB COUPLES (14)

QUALITY outfits topped at £284 for a ewe with twins from Jones, Gorlan, who also sold others at £210 and £164; £214 from Williams, Parcyperso­n, who also sold others at £182, £166 and £144; £160 from Davies, Hafan Gerdd; £156 from Thomas, Dolau Newydd.

STORE CATTLE AND GRAZING COWS (20)

STORES sold to a fast trade, with the best reaching £1,150 for a 22-mth BB heifer from Davies, Hendre, who also sold a 21-mth Hereford steer at £1,120, £1,025 for a 24-mth Limousin heifer.

A 1,100-kilo Limousin bull from Evans & Co, Pantirion, topped at £1,280; the same vendor also sold an AA cow weighing 840 kilos at £1,150; £1,080 for a 790k H/Fr from Jones & Co, Trewenfron; £935 for an 855k Hereford cow from Vaughan & Sons, Fagwrgoch.

CALVES (45)

REACHING £270 was a BB bull from Shepherd, Garnwen; £268 for a BB bull from Lloyd, Tegfan, who also sold other BB bulls at £235 and £232; £262 for a BB bull from Davies, Brynhyfryd, who also sold a BB heifer at £258; £245 for a BB heifer from Davies, Pantswllt; £240 for a Hereford bull from Harries, Bryngolau.

Dairy bull calves peaked at £108 for a Friesian from Jenkins & Rees Cyf, Trefere Fawr, who also sold another Friesian at £96; £90 for a Friesian from Williams, Treale.

A LARGER entry than expected, surprising­ly holding – and in some cases improving on – recent prices to average 247.72p/kg including a number of leaner sorts.

Meated sorts in demand to an outstandin­g top price of 293p/kg (£118-40.3kg) from TJ & AW Bayliss & Son, other mediums to 271p/kg (£112.50-41.5kg) GR & KF Parry; 269p/ kg (£115.50-4kg) AR Jacques; 267p/kg (£95-35kg) GJ & EB Watkins & Son; 262p/kg (£96.50-33kg) R Grey. Heavy tegs to 253p/kg (£124-49kg) J Mills; 251p/kg (£124-49.5kg) LLO Jones & Son, also making top price per head at £134.

NEW SEASON LAMBS

660 lambs to an easier trade in line with other centres as numbers rise, leaving a standard quality quotation of 285.57p/kg.

Fresh lighter-weight lambs in strong demand to a top of 328p/kg (£96.50-29.4kg) GO & L Williams; 311p/kg (£102.50-33kg) from the same vendor; 303p/kg (£104.5034.5kg) WE & CW Jones, who also sold 33kg weights at £99.50 (302p/kg). Best of the standardwe­ight range at 324p/kg (£120-39.2kg) DO & JJO Stephens; 294p/kg (£117.50-40kg) IG Jones; 293p/kg (£120-41kg) HG Vimpany. Heavy lambs to 278p/kg (£128-46kg) & 276p/kg (£127-46kg) from HG Vimpany and WJ & EA Lewis. Well-finished lambs to good competitio­n, leaner sorts more difficult to place.

CULL SHEEP

681 cull sheep sold to a blistering trade! The strongest ewes were as dear as ever, Suffolk X to £141 from DJ & P Parker. Charollais to £134.50 from RD, DR & RS Heath. Numerous pens in excess of £110. The second quality crossbreds look some of the dearest sold at £80-£90.

Hill breeds were exceptiona­l, Cheviot/Welsh ewes to £86 from NL Davies, the stronger types £75-plus, with very little under £50. A terrific ewe average of £73 says it all! The trade on cull rams was off the clock. Top of £178 from G Michalatos, Suffolks at £160 & £148 from WT & JM Probert. All strength £130-plus. Welsh to £118 from DV Ralph. The toothers were as dear as we have had them. Top of £118 from RM Edwards, £117 MJ Morgan and £114 DM Andrews.

STORE SHEEP

75 ewes with lambs at foot met plenty of interest and strong competitio­n. The strongest outfits were easily sold. Top of £200 for three Texel X ewes with five lambs from DM Andrews (£75/life). Suffolk X ewes with 1.5 lambs sold to £180 (£71/life) from K & D Powell. The selection of Welsh and Speckle ewes sold to £104 (£44/life) from WM Evans, other smaller outfits £30-£40/life.

The entry of store tegs sold to £124 for Mule ewe hoggs from G Ll. Davies; Charollais feeding hoggs to £60 from J Leonard; Welsh at £54 from RD Davies.

REARING CALVES

A MUCH better entry of 85 calves sold to a good trade, if a little easier overall than recent weeks. Some very strong 8 to 10-week-old calves from Penylan Farms Ltd made the top price with Blue bulls £460, £420 & £385 with a similar calf from AR Edwards & Son at £390. Younger bulls mostly £280£300.

A large number of native breed calves sold well, especially the smarter sorts. Top price was an Angus bull at £265 from Price & Co Farming Ltd, with a heifer at £170 from Penylan Farms. Hereford bulls to £215 and heifers £205 from A & R Giles Farming Ltd. Only five dairy bulls, all from Price & Co, made between £115 and £140.

ANOTHER good number of hoggs with a mixed show of quality met with a good trade.

Top price Standard 255p/kg and £98/head Gop Farm.

Top price Medium 282p/kg and £120/head E Davies Groes Fawr.

Top price Heavy 274p/kg J & H Lloyd Plas Newydd and £134/head G Owen Glanrafon.

NEW SEASON LAMBS

A SMALLER entry were harder to sell although the small lambs were similar. Best lambs were again a good trade.

Top price Light 390p/kg and £117/ head G O Lloyd & Son Bryn Goleu.

Top price Standard 400p/kg T Roberts Gorswen and £149/head A G & M T Davies Llys.

Top price Medium 383p/kg and £153/head I A & J A Thomas Penlan.

CULL EWES

ANOTHER big entry of ewes were a shade easier than last week although there was generally a lot of smaller ewes forward.

Best Continenta­l to £138, Welsh to £45 and mules to £90.
