Thunder storms and flash floods warning for bank holiday

-

PREDICTIONS of a bank holiday scorcher look to have been dashed with forecasters now predicting torrential rain, hail, thunder storms and flash flooding.

Weather warnings have been issued for today and tomorrow as Wales could be hit by downpours, with concerns that roads could be flooded and homes damaged.

There is a small chance communities could be cut off and life could be at risk as humid conditions lead to thundery weather.

The Met Office yellow warning is in place for Wales county from 6am tomorrow until 11.59pm on Sunday.

A spokesman said: “There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds. There is a small chance of fast-flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life. Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.”

The agency also warned that spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

They said: “There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads. There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”

A warning has been issued that 3cm of rain could fall every hour.

The Met Office said: “Very warm and humid conditions will lead to thunderstorms developing across parts of southern England, the South and West Midlands and Wales on both Saturday and Sunday. Thunderstorms will produce torrential rain and hail in places with up to 30 mm falling in an hour.”

But temperatures are still set to soar over the weekend – with highs of around 230C in some places.

But forecasters are now predicting more cloud cover, and a higher chance of heavy showers.
