Llandeilo antiques and vintage fair showcases local Gwili pottery
THE next antiques and vintage fair to be held at the Civic Hall, Llandeilo, will be on Saturday, June 2. The fair will provide visitors with inspiration and a choice of antiques at affordable prices.
This successful fair is held on the first Saturday of each month in the heart of the busy town of Llandeilo. The fair now includes a vintage element with a touch of retro. Whether hunting at the antique fair for enjoyment, surfing for just the right item for a loved one or finding that one thing you have been seeking for ages, the Llandeilo fair provides the ideal shopping experience.
Being a Welsh fair, it is understandable that there should be a good selection of Welsh items on offer. Whether it’s a original Welsh watercolour or oil, Gwili pottery or the highly soughtafter Ewenny pottery, visitors will be amazed at the variety on offer.
Gwili pottery is highly collected and has been produced for over 40 years in Pontarsais, near Carmarthen. The production of hand-thrown, handpainted, earthenware ceramics in both traditional and contemporary designs has made the pottery highly prized. Pru Green (pictured) started the pottery back in the 1980s and continues producing pottery today.
Pru is a ceramic artist who has worked for over 50 years with earthenware clay decorated with coloured slips. Each piece is handthrown with precision and hand-decorated with the utmost care.
At the tender age of 11, Pru gained a scholarship to study art at Sheffield College, where she discovered clay. In 1966 she bought a wheelwright’s premises with a small convenience store, petrol pumps and a milk delivery service, and transformed them into the now well-known Alvingham Pottery, where she ran a cafe alongside a ceramic workshop and selling space.
From Lincolnshire, Pru moved to Wales and set up Gwili Pottery in Carmarthen, another working studio and selling space.
The diversity of both range and colour of her pottery is amazing , from large impressive table lamps to the popular cawl bowls. They all display handpainted designs in both traditional and contemporary styles.
Welsh blankets and textiles will also feature heavily at the fair. There will be displays of fashion, toys and vintage clothes, upcycled and pre-loved furniture, paintings and prints, plus an impressive display of books, watches, clocks, silver and curios.
Homemade snacks and refreshments will be available at the fair. Doors open at 10am and close at 4pm. Admission is £1.
