Hope the lollies don’t run out – we’re still set for sunny spells

WALES sizzled in the sunshine this weekend, with temperature rocketing up to a sumptuous 24°C yesterday.

Thousands of people visited tourist attractions across the country, including in Cardiff, where they visited the Race Village for the Volvo Ocean Race.

Among the free family activities were taster sessions in paddleboarding and sailing, exploring the pit lanes of each sailing team, circus workshops with Kaos Youth Circus and lunchtime and sunset sessions of live music.

There were also paid-for activities including a climbing wall and a zip wire.

On Saturday visitors to Cardiff Bay saw displays of music from some of the military’s finest bands.

Events included a Royal Gun Salute fired outside the Pierhead Building by 104 Regiment Royal Artillery to commemorate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation.

Also in Cardiff, hundreds of sausage dogs strutted their stuff in Bute Park. Diminutive Dashshunds and their owners went for mass walkies in the park to raise awareness of IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease).

It is a genetic spinal problem which will affect 20% of the Dachshund breed during its lifetime, causing chronic back pain, rear leg paralysis and inability to walk or stand.

The first of its kind in the city, the event was also raising money via a raffle to support those families who have had to pay for surgery, hydrotherapy sessions, strollers and specially-adapted equipment to help their poorly pets stay active.

Similar sausage dog get-togethers have been held in Cornwall, London and Leeds, and a recent one in Manchester saw more than 1,000 pooches getting involved.

But the sunny weather won’t last everywhere.

The week ahead is forecast to be a lot drier and cooler across the country.

As the week progresses, it’s set to turn thundery, with heavy showers even expected towards the end of the week.

The Met Office says that tomorrow, in general, will see lingering mist gradually clear, with the country sunnier in the west and a risk of a few heavy showers.

For the rest of the week, it says that it will be “generally fine” with a “cooler, fresher feel” but “possibly some heavy, thundery showers on Thursday”.

Monday is off to a sunny start in Cardiff, with highs of 23°C, but by Tuesday it’s set to be grey and overcast, with highs of 18°C.

Swansea is set to have another scorcher of a week. Yesterday’s fine weather will continue into today, with highs of 22°C expected.

Tomorrow will be cloudier, with highs of 19°C, while the sun returns on Wednesday with highs of 18°C.

West Wales is set to get cloudier this week, with highs of only 17°C expected in St Davids today and throughout the week.

Aberystwyth is set to have a mixed few days – with the middle of the week set to have better weather.

And it’s set to be a sunny week in Caernarfon, and the best of the weather is still to come.

Today will see temperatures rise to 20°C, but they will fall to 17°C tomorrow.

But don’t fret, on Wednesday, they’re set to climb again to 19°C, before rising to a sunny 20°C on Thursday.
