SCHOLARSHIP CONTENDERS
THE young people competing for the Urdd Gobaith Cymru Bryn Terfel Scholarship 2018 have been selected.
Following the competitions on the Urdd Eisteddfod pavilion stage on Saturday, a panel of five adjudicators have selected six of the most promising competitors in the older age categories, under 25, to compete for the scholarship.
The six competing this year will be: Glain Rhys – Aelwyd Penllyn, Rhanbarth Meirionnydd; Celyn Cartwright – Canolfan Berfformio Cymru, Rhanbarth Caerdydd a’r Fro; Epsie Thompson – Aelod o tu allan i Gymru; Emyr Lloyd Jones – Aelod unigol Cylch Arfon, Rhanbarth Eryri; Elwyn Siôn Williams – Ysgol Gyfun Glantaf, Rhanbarth Caerdydd a’r Fro and Jodi Bird – Aelod unigol tu allan i Gymru.
Owain Sion, Iwan Llywelyn, Lowri Walton, Rhian Roberts and Sioned Gwen were the judging panel.
Here is a list of the competitions eligible for the scholarship: Cerdd Dant Solo 19-25 years; Folk Song Solo 19-25 years; Solo 19-25 years; Instrumental Solo 19-25 years; Individual Recitation 19-25 years; Dramatic Presentation 19-25 years; Solo from a Musical 19-25 years; Solo Dance for Boys aged 14-25 and Solo Dance for Girls aged 14-25.
The Scholarship will be held this year at Llandrindod Pavilion on Friday, October 12, with tickets on sale from the end of June.
In addition to earning the accolade of this scholarship, the winner will also receive a cash prize of £4,000 to be used to develop their talent for the future.
Established back in 1999, the aim of the scholarship is to foster the talent of some of Wales “finest young performers”.
In addition to the prize money, the scholarship winner will be associated with the famous singer Bryn Terfel, who is supportive to the development of new talent in Wales.
The panel said: “After a day full of discussions we reached the unanimous decision that this combination of competitors will lead to a thrilling competition.
“There was a wealth of talent on the Eisteddfod stage this year and we now look forward to seeing more from the six competitors when they put their own stamp on their performances in October.”
