It’s another episode of Project Fear

-

I WORKED in the laboratories of the steel works at Port Talbot in the 1950s and 60s when the Abbey works was regarded as one of the wonders of the industrial world.

Port Talbot was a boom town, a situation far different from what it is now.

The steel work’s future is decided in Mumbai and seems to lurch from scare to scare.

President Trump has imposed tariffs on steel imports, not a clever move because tariffs end up hurting everyone. He has done so to honour promises made to help communites in the “Rust Belt” and the mining areas when he was running for President. He is an eccentric but also has a businessman’s approach. He is also capable of changing his mind, having made his point.

He has imposed tariffs on steel imports from the EU of which we are still a member.

Also the tariffs are hurting the several EU states which export steel to the USA.

So what this has to do with Brexit eludes me. I suspect it’s another episode of “Project Fear”.

Globalisation is the real enemy of ordinary people. The money men go where conditions are cheap and then leave communities high and dry.

I have yet to see where the EU has provided a solution to this. Its rulers are more interested in expansion.

Calls for repeat referendums is an old EU trick. The EU might seem more attractive to ordinary working people if it addressed their legitimate concerns rather than dismissing them as “populist”.
