Awards first night out for singer

-

WELSH mezzo-soprano singer Katherine Jenkins has said last night’s Classic Brit Awards was her first proper night out since having her second child.

Jenkins, who was making her return to performing live at the event which was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, announced the birth of her son Xander in April.

The singer said fellow performer Sir Bryn Terfel had earlier soothed a crying Xander to sleep.

She said: “Xander was having a little cry earlier. Bryn is in the dressing room next door to me.

“He took him in his big arms and he sung a Welsh lullaby to him and put him to sleep. I was filming it, thinking, ‘You have no idea you have the world’s best baritone singing to you right now!’

“What a treat that is for him. Thank God I did record it!”

Jenkins also revealed she had started recording her next album.

Among the winners were Michael Ball and Alfie Boe who were named group of the year.

As they collected their prize, Ball joked: “It’s official - we’re a boy band now!”

Cellist and royal wedding performer Sheku Kanneh-Mason, 19, won the award for male artist of the year.

Pianist Tokio Myers, who was the 2017 winner of ITV show Britain’s Got Talent, collected a special award for breakthrough artist of the year.

US opera singer Renee Fleming won female artist of the year. Italian Andrea Bocelli, the biggest-selling classical artist of all time, was recognised with the Classic Brit Icon award.
