Ex-mayor accused of raping child told police claims made him ‘sick’

AFORMER mayor has denied sexually abusing two young girls more than a quarter of a century ago and said the idea of it made him “feel sick”.

Former mayor of Pembroke David Boswell is facing seven charges of sexual assault of a girl under 13, and one of rape, with the offences said to have happened between February 1991 and February 1994.

Day three of his trial saw at Swansea Crown Court saw the 56-year-old giving evidence in his own defence.

The court also heard details of the former soldier’s police interviews which were conducted after the allegation­s against him were made in 2016.

His barrister, Jim Davies, asked the councillor whether he had “sexually interfered” with the girls in the way alleged. He replied: “No sir”. Asked whether he had raped one of the girls the 56-year-old again replied: “No sir”.

Catherine Richards, for the prosecutio­n, asked Boswell whether he had any idea whether one of his victims had written about the alleged abuse in her teenage diaries, to which he replied: “No ma’am”.

Asked whether the evidence the woman had given the trial had been a “complete lie” and a “complete act” Boswell replied that it had.

Ms Richards then said: “You sexually abused them, didn’t you? You were getting sexual gratificat­ion from it, weren’t you?”

Boswell ma’am.”

The court also heard details of police interviews given by the defendant after the allegation­s were first made.

In his first interview he said: “I can put my hand on the bible and say I have never sexually assaulted those girls.”

In his second interview he said the allegation­s made him “feel sick”, adding: “It makes no sense to me. You can give me a lie detector if you want.”
