Concert was ‘a Brechtian cabaret of two halves’

The Tiger Lillies, Sherman Theatre, Cardiff

-

THE Festival of Voice presented a Brechtian cabaret of two halves at the Sherman Theatre on Saturday night with grand daddies of the punk world The Tiger Lillies bringing down the house with a divisive performance.

The first half the show comprised entirely of one song, The Ballad of Sexual Dependency. An extended art piece featuring the controversial photography of Nan Goldin and set to woozy theremin, sinister accordion and Martyn Jacques’ haunting falsetto. To say there were no punches pulled would be an understatement with many of the images graphically depicting nudity, drug use, illness, injury and violence.

There was a short break for the audience to process what they had seen leading to A particular highlight was The some impassioned arguments about Dreadful Story About Harriet and the artistic expression in the foyer. Some of the Matches, a cautionary tale about fire as more casual fans wandered around a little observed by kittens. With lyrics taken shell shocked. A few gothy couples who from the bleak German children’s book had come for a bit of dark vaudeville Struwwelpeter, it is only a reference to hadn’t quite found their sea legs yet, but hell away from being “peak Tiger Lillies”. luckily they would not be disappointed. Speaking of which, a lot of bands sing

The second half rewarded our patience songs about hell but very few seem to with a rollicking rollercoaster of revelries think about it as much as this band. In from the band’s back catalogue including fact, encore song Banging in the Nails, a Go, Jack and Bank Robber’s Blues. There triumph of catchy blasphemy, finished were covers, Stephen Sondheim’s Send in with Jacques sighing “I think I’m going the Clowns, played to skewed Tiger to hell aren’t I?”. I honestly can’t say for Lillian perfection by Adrian Stout on certain Martyn, but if you play as well as double bass, guitar and theremin, Jonas you did on Saturday night, I’m sure Golland on drums and frontman Jacques they’d welcome you with open arms! on piano and accordion. ■ Mat Troy
