£9m dual carriageway scheme to ease traffic could be approved

-

A £9m scheme to reduce congestion and delays at a “bottle-neck” in Rhondda Cynon Taf is set to be approved.

The council’s cabinet will consider plans to make the A4119 Ely Valley Road between Llantrisant Business Park and Coed Ely roundabouts a dual carriageway.

The £9.6m proposal is to create two 3.65 metre wide lanes in both directions and will cover 1.3km of the road which connects the Rhondda Valleys to the M4 corridor.

The report says that the area is set to cater for an increase in both peak and off-peak traffic between Cardiff city centre and South East RCT/North West Cardiff as a consequence of planned major residential and commercial developments in the area.

In March 2017, £302,000 was spent on both the A4119 and Llanharan Bypass projects as part of the Making Better Uses Programme while a further £1m was allocated to each respective project in October 2017.

Another, £100,000 came from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Network Fund for 2017/18, and £300,000 for the A4119 Corridor from the same fund in 2018/19.

A planning application, if required, will be submitted if cabinet approves the proposal which will also allow the council to complete any compulsory purchase orders (CPOs) or side road orders (SROs) that may be required.

At present 18 separate landowners have been identified including the council, which owns land which will be required for the project but the works won’t require any properties to be demolished.

Consultation is ongoing and the plans will go out for public exhibition this autumn or winter before being
