EU is coming apart at the seams

-

CHICKENS invariably come home to roost and this is coming true for the EU. An organisation which is supposed to unite various nations in peace and prosperity is coming apart at the seams. It appears that its “iron clad” dicatorial rules are at last being challenged by populations of states which have been loyal supporters. Far from working for all people in the member states, it is now seen to not only cause deep seated divisions in societies but is content to persue it’s own dictats regardless.

It has been revealing to see the deep divisions in living standards and attitudes between the elites and those who are considered unworthy of an opinion. Unrestricted freedom of movement does not take into account the problems caused for settled populations which are real and many and usually not likely to affect those who advocate it. This results in disproportional areas of prosperity in some places while others face steady and on-going decline. Then there are the advocates for the EU many of whom have benefitted considerably from it, who are willing to overturn democratic processes which have been fought for and built up over hundreds of years, in order to keep their privileges. The tragic and damaging flow of migrants from sub Saharan Africa continues despite the hand wringing. Libya is now a base for people smugglers who are content to send people to sea in unsuitable craft only to be “rescued” by charitable organisations who mean well but are not responsible for what happens when these people are landed. The EU may have set out to bring peace and unity to a warntorn Europe but I fear like a good many other things, it has been highjacked along the way. H Thomas Neath
