No power or loo - but hut sells for £27k

ABEACH hut in Mumbles which was put up for auction has smashed its reserve price - and sold for a whopping £27,000.

The timber-constructed hut at Rotherslade has no electricity, no toilet and no parking provided, nor does it have its own water supply.

But the much-coveted facilities are privately owned and seldom come onto the market, so the rare opportunity to purchase one saw a number of bidders compete to buy the property, and smash its £20,000 guide price.

It was sold at an auction at Swansea’s Marriott Hotel.

The man who bought the beach hut, who wished to remain anonymous, said they were looking forward to enjoying the views and seeing their grandchildren enjoy the beach.

He added: “We live within walking distance of the hut and we intend to use it to take our grandchildren down to the beach. We want to be able to have somewhere where we can store items.

“We also expect to sit there one evening and enjoy a glass of wine watching the sun go down.”

The man, who is in his 70s, said they may also use it to do some seascape painting.

It is the first time they have owned a beach hut, he added, and they will be getting the keys in the middle of July.

He said they paid more for the hut that he had hoped for, but that they had been making plans and wanted to have it.

Chris Hope, director of estate agents Dawsons handling the sale of the property, said: “We had not quite anticipated the final price, but then it didn’t entirely surprise me either.

“I don’t think the sale was based on historic property value, but it was about what the buyer was prepared to go to.

“The room at the auction was full, and there were five or six bidders taking part for the hut.

“The gentleman bidding for it bid from the start and was the last to do so and I think he might have been prepared to go further. But I’m pleased for the seller, and I hope the new owner and his family are looking forward to using it for years to come.”

The beach hut is situated on one of Gower’s most popular beaches and is within walking distance of neighbouring Langland Bay.

Langland is famous for its row of beach huts overlooking the beach, which started to be built in the 1860s, but those are owned and leased out by Swansea Council.
