4 nights, 2 comfort breaks and 1 Wales jersey ...why we’ll never forget Ed’s visit

ED Sheeran kept his 60,000 fans waiting at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Saturday night so he could go to the toilet – twice in one show.

The pop superstar even cut one song short when he was caught short himself, breaking off in the middle of hit single Photograph in order to answer the call of nature.

“I’m so sorry, Cardiff,” he told the crowd, having already exited the stage three songs previously because he “needed a pee”.

On both occasions Sheeran received a huge cheer when he finally reappeared.

He admitted to the crowd: “I’ve been playing live since I was 14 and I’ve never had to do that before.

“And now I do it in front of 60,000 people.”

His audience was more than forgiving, however – after all, it’s not like he has a backing band who can cover for him should he need to slip away discreetly.

The singer played the last of his record-breaking run of four consecutive shows at the venue last night – although the first three appearances were met by major tailbacks on the M4 into Cardiff as fans descended on the capital en masse.

Last night fans were expecting even more travel chaos, with both Arriva Trains Wales and Great Western Rail warning their services would be limited after the concert.

Indeed, on some routes the last trains were scheduled to have departed Cardiff long before the end of the gig, around 10.30pm.

The reason quoted was so that essential weekly train maintenance could take place, to ensure a full commuter service this morning.

Travel troubles aside, the fournight spectacle has kept most of Wales talking. On the first night, Sheeran performed the encore wearing a Wales shirt – with Gareth Bale’s name on the back.

It topped off a spectacular evening as part of his Divide European tour, where he gushed about Wales, its people, and the Principality Stadium.

He told the crowd he has a “deep love” for Wales.

Love was also in the air on opening night, with a proposal in the crowd as Sheeran performed his song Perfect.

And the memorable moments kept on coming, when night number two quickly rolled around.

Fans could have been forgiven for dancing on the ceiling as US soul legend Lionel Richie was spotted at the show.

And for some the four-night run meant more than one visit, as Dawn and Rhys Howell spent £645 to see three of the Cardiff shows.

Prior to last week, the pair had seen the superstar play twice. They travelled to Birmingham and Wembley last year.
