Family’s torment after son, 3, dies in his sleep

- LYDIA MORRIS newsdesk@walesonline.co.uk

ALITTLE boy went to bed just days after his third birthday but never woke up.

Grieving mum Sophie Jones said their son Thomas had been absolutely fine the day before he died, playing on his rollerskates.

But when she and her partner Adam Williams went to check on him in the morning, the toddler didn’t respond.

Despite frantic efforts to revive him, ambulance crews had to break the tragic news that Thomas had died in his sleep.

Ms Jones, 26, and Mr Williams, 34, still don’t know what happened to their beloved son, who was brother to James, eight, and one-year-old Ethan. A postmortem examination was said to have found nothing out of the ordinary, they said.

Distraught Ms Jones said: “My life will never be the same again,” Ms Jones told the Daily Post. “He lived his little life to the fullest. He was a typical little boy. I am glad I can remember him as the happy little boy that he was.

“He had been playing on his rollerskates all day the day before, he was completely fine – and that makes it worse for me. If he had been ill, perhaps I could have prepared myself for this. I just wish I had answers.

“Thomas will never be forgotten, he will be talked about every day.”

Ms Jones and Mr Williams, from Wrexham, received permission from the coroner to take their little boy to Hope House’s Snowflake Room – a special bedroom where family can stay close to their child after they have died.

The funeral was held at Bethel Chapel, Wrexham, on June 7, three weeks after the toddler, who attended Flying Start nursery at Bodhyfryd School, passed away on May 18.

“It was a peaceful death,” Ms Jones added. “His dad had gone to check on him at about 5:45am, and when he went back in at around 8:20am, he had passed away. I don’t think there is a way to describe how I feel. I am still coming to terms with it.

“He was a bit tired when he was going to bed, but because of all the excitement from his party a couple of days before, I thought it was normal.

“I feel as if I’m looking for someone to blame. I feel angry and upset.

“I keep asking myself, could I have done more as a parent? I suppose it is just one of those things.”

Now, they are organising a family fun day in memory of Thomas and to raise funds for Hope House and the North Wales Crusaders Wheelchair Rugby League.

The event will be held at The Club House on Wrexham Industrial Estate on Sunday, August 5 from 12pm until 4pm.

Ms Jones added: “Hope House were amazing, it was a lovely place for him to go. I would have rather he go there than anywhere else.

“And we’ve chose North Wales Crusaders Wheelchair Rugby League as one of our charities as it’s very close to our families hearts.”
