11-week ban for player filmed throwing punch

-

THE rugby player caught on camera throwing a violent punch in a club game last month has been banned from playing for 11 weeks.

Cwmgors’ Carwyn Williams was cited following the incident in the Division Two West Central clash at Nantyffyllon.

Williams faced a Welsh Rugby Union disciplinary hearing where he was slapped with an 11-week suspension.

A WRU statement said: “Following a WRU Disciplinary hearing, Carwyn Williams of Cwmgors RFC has been suspended for a period of 11 weeks for a breach of Law 9.12 (Punching) in the Division Two West Central League match against Nantyffyllon last month.”

The incident went unpunished on the field, but received widespread condemnation when WalesOnline published the video, which was taken by a spectator attending the match.

The video footage shows a couple of off-the-ball scuffles then Williams comes in with a right hook which floored one of the Nantyffyllon players. Cwmgors won the game 24-12. Nantyffyllon secretary Bernard Colston told the Western Mail last month: “The player who was punched is fine.

“To be honest the game was a pretty nasty affair.

“We don’t play games like that normally. It was a very unsavoury affair.

“To be fair on that one offence he was probably following the ball.

“There was a lot of off-the-ball stuff.”
