Employees pilfered £30k of stock from warehouse

-

A HUGE portrait of NHS founder Aneurin Bevan has been unveiled on a Welsh mountainside to celebrate 70 years of the service.

Britain’s Got Talent finalist Nathan Wyburn created the 10m x 14m piece of art on Trefil moorland – three miles north of Bevan’s home town of Tredegar.

The portrait is made from soil and white stone dust from a local quarry and marks the end of the Bevan Festival 2018 events in Tredegar in honour of his life.

Bevan’s upbringing in the town and work with the Tredegar Workingmen’s Medical Aid Society helped to inspire his vision for the NHS.

Mr Wyburn, who was born in south Wales, said: “I’m extremely proud of this. Not only is it a tribute to one of the nation’s most loved institutions, it’s also a celebration of Bevan’s home and the place where the NHS all began.” A PAIR of employees betrayed the trust of the company they worked for by stealing more than £30,000 worth of stock – including tuna, sweetcorn and chocolate.

Robert Curry and Craig Rattenbury also cost their employer Wild Water £350,000 a year in lost revenue after key clients terminated their contracts, Cardiff Crown Court heard.

The court heard the thefts occurred between January 2015 and August 2016.

Heath Edwards, prosecuting, said Wild Water operated a storage facility for products owned by other companies and had three sites.

Prosecutors said Curry had a more senior role as overall site manager, while Rattenbury was warehouse manager at the Llanishen site in Cardiff.

Mr Edwards told the court Curry and Rattenbury stole items including tuna, sweetcorn and chocolate worth £30,320 over approximately an 18-month period, before their offending came to light in August 2016.

Mr Edwards said: “The reputation of the company suffered.”

He explained customers heard about the thefts and started to wonder whether their stock would be safe and secure in the warehouse.

The court heard two customers ended contracts as a direct result of the offending, costing the business £350,000 a year in lost revenue.

Curry was jailed for 10 months. Rattenbury was given a five-month jail term, suspended for a year, ordered to complete 200 hours’ unpaid wor, plus 15 days of a rehabilitation activity, and must pay £2,500 in costs.
